Pu-erh tea (pronounced POO-air) is the most oxidized form of tea, often aged, and sometimes very expensive. Unlike other teas, which get stale over time, pu-erh can mellow and improve with age like fine wine. Some pu-erh teas are more than 50 years old, and rare ones sell for many thousands of dollars in Asian specialty stores. Pu-erh originates from the Yunnan province in China and has been prized for its health benefits for over 2,000 years.
Pu-erh teas come from China’s Yunnan Province and are named for a city in southern Yunnan. These teas are highly valued in China where the processing methods have been a well-guarded secret for centuries. Pu-erh’s distinct flavor comes from the fact that after the leaves are picked, they are made into a sundried base tea called maocha and then fermented. After that, the leaves are aged and then packed into bricks, cakes or pellets. Pu-erh tea can be re-steeped 2 to 3 times, making this tea a great value.
You can also buy Pu-erh as loose tea leaves. Since the tea is fermented it was an earthy sweetness with deep brown liquor and a light sherry bouquet. Some people find the tea a bit too earthy so I have a blend that most people love. My Pu-erh blend is made of loose leaf pu-erh, organic cocoa nibs and organic coconut bits. It has a smooth taste with a delicious flavor. If you would like to start drinking pu-erh teas, this is a great pu-erh tea to get you started.
Pure Pu-erh Tea is recommended and used by many physicians in their weight loss programs. They also recommend this tea to lower cholesterol levels as well as to improve digestion. Pu-erh tea has become best known for its ability to inhibit an enzyme complex called fatty acid synthase (FAS), which has been linked to obesity.
There are many compounds that are created during fermentation. One of the main compounds made is lovastatin. Lovastatin is one of the most effective cholesterol-lowering agents there is. It is the only statin that can raise good cholesterol (HDL) as well as lowering bad cholesterol (LDL). The key of most cholesterol lowering agents it to prevent arteriosclerosis and reduce plaque in the heart to help prevent strokes and improve circulation.
Pu-erh tea also contains the amino acid GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). GABA is the most important inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system (CNS), where, among other things, it acts as a relaxant and stabilizer of mood disorders.” This may enhance the immune system, which is notoriously susceptible to degradation by anxiety and stress.
Pu-erh tea is known to have anti-inflammatory properties that may help to alleviate arthritis. The chemical theophylline, which occurs naturally in tea leaves, is a key component in some asthma medications. Therefore drinking this tea may help people who suffer from asthma.
There is no doubt that pu-erh tea along with green tea can greatly improve your body’s ability to stay healthy. If you are one of the many people who have a New Year’s resolution to shed some pounds, remember that you did not gain all your weight in a couple of months. In order to be healthier and thinner start making better decisions about what you eat. Don’t give up a thin healthier life is a marathon not a sprint.
I wish you the best in 2015.
